Indian wildlife -Dudhwa National Park -New home of Indian Rhinos.
Dudhwa National park located in Lakhimpur kheri district in Uttar Pardesh is indeed a heaven on earth. Home to numerous species like tigers, rhino (introduced species) sloth beas, Nilqais, elephants and over 400 species of birds like Bengal florican, swamp partridge- it is worthy of visits. Last evening we reached at Dudhwa Forest Rest House situated at main range office. I was not able to sleep properly because of my anticipation of wildlife sightings. My heart skips a beat at the thought of a tiger or rhinos seen in the natural habitat.
At dawn, we sat on our vehicle, the reliable female elephant & set off for an exciting journey towards sonaripur range. Elephants are best vehicles for wandering in this vast wilderness. Dudhwa was declared a National park in 1997 & became part of project tiger in 1988. It contains 680 Sq kms of Dudhwa & 200 Sq Km of Kishanpur W.S separated from Dudhwa by sarda river & Palia town. The flora of the park is primarily sal trees & vast grasslands. In 1984, one-horned rhinos were introduced in the park & can be seen in the sonaripur range where we were standing right now. Their number is believed to be 20.
We heard some noise near grasslands on right side of us & further investigation revealed a lone male rhino. Startled at our sudden intrusion, rhino seemingly ready to attack us We decided to leave it alone & headed towards the salukhapur. We spotted herds of cheetal, countless birds & decided to go back.
Next day we visited Kishanpur WLS which is known to be the home of Swamp deer, a rare species. Fortunately, we sported a group of four swamp deer drinking water near a waterhole. At dusk, we returned on our jeep & our driver signaled us to be silent as there was a 'call'. A call is a warning of the presence of a predator like tiger or leopard on the prowl. We waited anxiously as our dream seemingly got fulfilled. Suddenly a male magnificent tiger appeared from bushes on a kuchha path & stared at us. It was a moment of lifetime. It disappeared as swiftly as it appeared. we started breathing the moment it disappeared. Our journey was completed.
Best time to visit the part is mid-November to April.
