Kaziranga National Park,Assam,India- the last home for one-horned Rhinos
The early morning misty view of forests of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) was mesmerizing and I was carried away by the ambience of forests.Persistent chirping of birds confirmed the fact that KNP has abundant bird life of over 450 species. Known for rare one-horned rhinos, this fact is highly underestimated.We were hoping to see big wildlife. Suddenly our jeep came to halt as a lone male swamp buffallo was staring at us. It was a magnificent beast. KNP is home to 70% of world is swamp or wild buffalo population. We waited till it moves toward vast grassland. Our journey was further rewarded by a herd of female elephants munching on grass cosily. The day seemed to be lucky one. But our eyes were looking for something synonymous with KNP-One horned rhinos. But we got a glimpse of this mighty beast on last day of our journey. The sight was rare, mesmerizing but frightening .
KNP covering 480 Sq kms adjoins the mighty Brahmputra river. It was declared a national part in 1974. In 1908, British Government declared it a reserve forest. In 198, it was declared a world Heritage site by UNESCO recognizing its status as a bio-diversity hotspot. Amazingly, KNP is home to 1500 rare one-horned rhino, 1000 wild elephants, 70 percent of world's swamp buffalo
KNP is flooded by backflow of Brahmputra every year during monsoon which helps in rejuvenation of this area but floods may sometimes prove lethal for wildlife. KNP is demarcated into three tourist ranges viz:- Kohara, Baghori & Agaratoli. The longest of all tourist ranges, Kohara itself is complete Kaziranga & one should travel this range.
Best time to visit this part is November-April. Jeep & elephant safaris are must while visiting KNP.

By Air:-Nearest Airport is Jorhat about 97 Kms from KNP.
By Rail:- IS Jorhat.
By Road:-KNP is well connected by road & located on Gurahati-Jorhat NH-37.
