Time for outdoor play

We all want the best for our children but it can sometimes be difficult to know exactly what is the best and how we can go about achieving it. There's been a lot of talk in the media about childhood health problems, with a particular concentration of commentary on the issue of obesity.

Childhood obesity has undoubtedly become a real cause for concern. Levels have been steadily rising in recent years and experts have been looking at exactly why this is the case. Most of the evidence points to changing lifestyles.

The rise in junk food consumption and a reduction in exercise have clearly not helped. You may have your own techniques for restricting your child's consumption of junk food, but in this article we take a look at the other side of the equation.

If you'd like to encourage your children to get more exercise then how can you go about doing so? Many of their favourite types of entertainment may involve relatively little movement. They may, for example, enjoy watching the television and playing computer games.

Convincing them to give up these activities may not be easy. Your best approach will probably be to try and cut down the amount of time that they spend on them, rather than removing them completely.

But what alternatives might you introduce? It's important that you show your children that exercise doesn't have to be boring - introduce toys and games that are fun for them and will also help them to be more active.

The key is to show your kids that playing active games can actually be at least as much fun as video games and the like.

Introducing them to more varieties of outdoor play is likely to be central to your aims. Outdoor games will often involve more movement and more exercise as a result.

You might, for instance, want to get them playing on a trampoline or making use of a climbing frame. The message that you'll want to get across is that they can enjoy themselves by spending more time outdoors.

Make them see the benefits of playing outside and they will reap the rewards.
