Using Chicken Nesting Boxes

Once you have a chicken nesting box you need to ensure that you site it properly and that it is used correctly. Hens are not fussy birds but they will do better if you can may their life a little more comfortable. To this end it is worth taking a little time before deciding where to site the laying boxes.

The nesting boxes should always be placed out of the draughts if possible. This will simply make them more inclined to use it. You may often find eggs layed outside of the boxes if the site is not best suited to the birds. I always prefer to place the laying boxes on the floor. This ensures the chickens have easy access and more importantly, if a bird lays outside the box while it is stood in it there is less chance of a broken egg.

This is especially true of young hens. They are very likely to stand in the laying box but lay the egg outside. It simply takes a while for them to get used to it.

I also ensure that the laying box either has a very steeply sloped roof or it has a shelf above it. You do not want any mess from droppings so a steep roof or a shelf will protect the nest and the roof would stop any birds roosting on the top of the chicken nesting boxes. A few simple steps are always worth considering before you site the boxes, it will save time in the future and therefore make life a little easier.
